Replacing only one leaves a mismatched pair that lifts unevenly, pulls the door crooked, and usually brings a technician back within months for the second spring, which means paying a second service call. Can I open the door manually with a broken spring?
Only if you have to, and never alone. A double-car door with a dead spring weighs 150 to 250 pounds and has nothing holding it up. Pull the red emergency release cord so the opener is disconnected, lift with a second person, and clamp locking pliers onto the track under the bottom roller if you need to hold it open to get a car out. Do not run the opener against a broken spring, because the motor is not built to lift the full weight and a stripped gear turns a spring job into an opener job too. Torsion spring replacement: how we size the right spring
A torsion spring is not a generic part. We measure the wire size, the inside diameter and the length of the old spring and weigh the door, then fit a spring rated for that weight so the door balances at any height. A spring that is close but not right leaves the door heavy at the bottom or floating at the top, and the opener pays for it.
