Signs the rollers are worn
- Noise. A grinding, rumbling or high squeal that travels along the track as the door moves. This is the most common complaint we get from Boca Raton homeowners, especially where the garage sits under a bedroom.
- Shaking or jerking. The door vibrates or hesitates at the same spot every time, usually where the vertical track curves into the horizontal run.
- Visible wear. Cracked or flat-spotted wheels, a stem that wobbles in the hinge, or a wheel that has stopped spinning and simply drags.
- Rust. Steel rollers corrode quickly in coastal Palm Beach County air, and the bearings seize.
- The door has jumped the track. A roller that breaks or pulls out of its hinge lets that corner of the door leave the track. If the door is off track, stop using the opener and call.
Nylon versus steel rollers
A standard residential door runs on ten to twelve rollers, two per hinge section plus the top and bottom fixtures, each with a 2-inch wheel on a 4-inch stem. Most doors were installed with the roller the builder chose, which is often a plain steel wheel with a few loose ball bearings and no seal.
We install sealed nylon ball-bearing rollers as our standard replacement. The nylon wheel is quiet in the track, the sealed bearing keeps salt and grit out, and a quality roller is rated for well over 10,000 cycles, which is roughly ten years of normal use. For heavy wood or oversized doors we use the correct heavy-duty roller for the weight; a light roller on a heavy door is the fastest way to be doing this job again.
Why rollers fail in South Florida
- Corrosion. Humidity and salt air get into unsealed bearings. Within a mile or two of the beach, unsealed steel rollers can seize in a few years.
- Builder-grade parts. Many 1990s and 2000s doors in west Boca and Boca Del Mar still run on the original rollers, well past their design life.
- No lubrication, or the wrong lubricant. WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant, and it strips what little grease the bearing had. Rollers and hinges want a silicone or lithium-based garage door lubricant.
- Bent stems and worn hinges. A door that has been forced or run out of balance bends roller stems and wallows out the hinge holes. New rollers in a worn hinge still wobble.
- Track problems. A dented or misaligned track chews up rollers. We check the track before we replace anything.
How we replace them
- Inspect the whole system. Track alignment, hinges, springs and cables. Roller noise is sometimes a symptom of a door that is out of balance, and we tell you if that is the case.
- Replace the rollers one section at a time. With the door secured, the technician works down the door, swapping rollers hinge by hinge so the door never leaves the track.
- The bottom rollers are the exception. The bottom fixtures carry the lift cables and are under full spring tension. Those rollers cannot be changed safely without releasing the springs, and this is the step that injures do-it-yourselfers. We handle it with winding bars and clamps.
- Replace hinges that are worn, so the new rollers sit straight.
- Lubricate, balance, test. Hinges, bearings and the new rollers are lubricated, the door balance is checked, and the opener force and safety-reverse settings are confirmed before we leave.

Can I replace garage door rollers myself?
The middle rollers, with care, yes. The bottom rollers, no. The bottom fixtures are attached to the lift cables under spring tension, and releasing that tension without winding bars and training is how people get hurt. Because a partial set leaves the door uneven, we replace all of them in one visit.
How many rollers does my door have?
A standard 4-section door has 10 rollers; a 5-section door has 12. Double-wide and oversized doors sometimes carry more, and heavy doors use a stronger roller.
Will new rollers make the door quiet?
If the noise is coming from the rollers, yes, and the difference is immediate. If the noise is a dry hinge, a loose opener chain or an unbalanced door, we will tell you, because new rollers will not fix those.
Should I lubricate the rollers?
Nylon sealed-bearing rollers need very little. A light coat of silicone-based garage door lubricant on hinges and bearings twice a year is plenty. Never spray the track itself; a slick track makes the rollers slide instead of roll.
How long do nylon rollers last?
Quality sealed nylon rollers are rated for 10,000 cycles or more, which for most Boca Raton homes is ten years and often longer. Salt air shortens the life of unsealed steel rollers far more than nylon.
