How to tell the cable is the problem
- The door is crooked. One side sits higher than the other, or the door is wedged at an angle in the tracks. A cable has come off its drum or broken on one side.
- A loose cable is hanging or coiled near the bottom corner of the door, or wrapped loosely around the drum at the top.
- The door stopped partway and the opener strains or reverses.
- Visible fraying where the cable meets the bottom bracket, or rust bloom along the strands. Coastal salt air east of I-95 shortens cable life noticeably.
- A loud bang from the garage followed by a door that will not lift. Very often that is a torsion spring breaking, which in turn throws the cables off the drums. We check both.
If the door is crooked or stuck, stop using the opener. Forcing it bends the tracks and can pull the top section out of the hinges, which turns a cable job into a panel job.
What garage door cables actually do
On a torsion-spring door, two steel lift cables run from the bottom brackets at the base of the door up to the cable drums on the torsion shaft above the opening. The springs wind the shaft, the drums wind the cables, and the cables carry the full weight of the door. On an older extension-spring door the cables run over pulleys to the springs along the horizontal tracks instead. Either way the cables are under load every time the door moves, and they are the part that gives first.
Residential cables are typically 1/8-inch galvanized aircraft-grade wire rope, sized to the door height and the drum. A cable that is the wrong length or gauge will never seat properly and will slip again.
Why cables fail in South Florida
- Corrosion. Salt air and humidity work into the strands, especially at the bottom bracket where water collects. This is the number one cause we see in Boca Raton, Highland Beach and Deerfield Beach.
- Fraying at the bracket. The cable bends hardest where it attaches to the bottom fixture, and that is where strands break.
- A broken spring. When a torsion spring snaps, the drums stop turning under control and the cables jump off. The cable may be fine, but it cannot be reseated safely without addressing the spring.
- Worn or misaligned drums. A drum with a worn groove or a set screw that has slipped lets the cable ride out of its track.
- Builder-grade parts. Many 2000s-era doors in west Boca were installed with the lightest cable the manufacturer offered. They last, but not forever.
How we repair it
- Secure the door. We clamp the door in the tracks so it cannot move while the system is open.
- Release spring tension. Using winding bars, the technician unwinds the torsion springs completely. This is the step that makes cable work dangerous for homeowners: the springs store enough energy to cause serious injury, and the bottom brackets are under that same tension.
- Remove and inspect. Old cables come off, and we inspect the drums, the bottom brackets, the end bearing plates and the center bearing. A cable that failed because of a bad drum will fail again on a bad drum.
- Fit new cables, in pairs. We replace both cables every time. A new cable paired with a worn one leaves the door out of balance and puts the new one under uneven load.
- Re-tension, balance, test. Springs are wound back to spec for the door weight, the door is balanced so it holds still at halfway on its own, and the opener force and safety-reverse settings are checked before we leave.

Can I replace a garage door cable myself?
We advise against it. Replacing cables means releasing and rewinding torsion springs, and the bottom brackets the cables attach to are under that spring tension. Both carry a manufacturer warning label for a reason. It is a quick job for a technician with winding bars and the right cable, and a dangerous one without them.
Why replace both cables if only one broke?
Both cables were installed the same day and have the same wear. The second one usually fails within months, and a mismatched pair leaves the door lifting unevenly, which is hard on the opener and the tracks.
The door is stuck open at an angle. Is that an emergency?
